81-Year-Old Woman Who Carried Foetus For 56 Years Dies After Undergoes Surgery To Remove It

An 81-year-old woman from Aral Moreira in Brazil, identified as Daniela Vera, has tragically passed away after undergoing surgery to remove a 56-year-old lithopedion, a calcified foetus, from her abdomen. According to NDTV, Vera sought treatment for a urinary tract infection at a local health center on March 10, where subsequent 3D scans at another hospital revealed the presence of the lithopedion. This condition, derived from Greek words meaning ‘stone’ and ‘child,’ occurs when an abdominal ectopic pregnancy becomes calcified around the foetus.

Despite having seven children, the calcified foetus remained unnoticed until the recent scans revealed it. Vera underwent surgery to remove the foetus, but unfortunately, she passed away on March 15 due to complications from an infection while in intensive care.

Medical experts initially suspected cancer before discovering the lithopedion, which Daniela had carried in her body since her last pregnancy over five decades ago. Dr. Patrick Dezir, the head of the Ponta Pora Hospital health department, explained that pregnancies typically occur inside the uterus but can sometimes occur outside, leading to conditions like lithopedion.

Vera’s daughter, Rosely Almedia, shared that her mother had complained of abdominal pain since her first pregnancy as a teenager. Despite experiencing symptoms like the sensation of a baby moving inside her belly and occasional sickness, the true cause remained unsuspected until the recent diagnosis.
