The Arewa Defence League (ADL) has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who embodied the hopes, struggles, and aspirations of Northern Nigeria and the nation at large. In a heartfelt tribute, the youth-focused advocacy group reflected on his principles of justice, equity, and disciplined public service.

ACCORDING TO ‘IREPORTER ONLINE’, ADL President, Murtala Abubakar, issued a statement commemorating the late president’s legacy, stating that Buhari was more than just a former leader—he was a symbol of generational belief in change, security, and economic transformation. “As a disciplined military officer turned democrat, President Buhari represented the yearnings of the ordinary Nigerian,” the group emphasized.

The organization, known for mobilizing northern youths during the 2011 and 2015 elections, acknowledged that while Buhari’s administration (2015–2023) did not fully meet the enormous expectations placed on it—particularly in the areas of security, economy, and national unity—it still believes his contributions cannot be erased.

“We recognize that no leader is perfect,” the statement read. “The insecurity, economic hardship, and regional divisions that persisted under his watch were painful realities. Still, we remember his discipline, infrastructure push, social investment efforts, and the foundational work he laid in the fight against Boko Haram.”
