This injection, known as Injectable cabotegravir (CAB_LA), marks a significant advancement in biomedical intervention for HIV prevention, offering a convenient and potent method to thwart transmission among individuals at heightened risk.
Unlike the conventional daily pill regimen for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), this injection requires administration only once every two months, presenting a more practical and manageable option for those seeking protection against the virus.
Renowned medical figure Dr. Misheck Ruwende hailed the development as he announced Zimbabwe’s inaugural recipient of the HIV prevention injection. He underscored its convenience compared to daily pills, sparking optimism within the medical community.
Presently, the injection is exclusively accessible through Population Solutions for Health at New Start Centres, with plans for wider distribution yet to be unveiled.
The introduction of CAB_LA has ignited discussions across social media platforms, with users expressing curiosity about its similarities to contraceptive ‘Depo’ shots and seeking information regarding availability, potential side effects, and implications for treatment protocols.
While the HIV prevention injection is provided free of charge, its availability remains limited, and the selection criteria for recipients have not been fully disclosed.
