Taraba University Students Released After Nearly Two Weeks In Abduction

In a long-awaited development, two students from the Federal University Wukari in Taraba State, who were abducted almost two weeks ago, have finally regained their freedom. Ashu Agbu, the head of the Information and Protocol Unit at the university, confirmed the students’ release, indicating that they were freed after spending days in captivity. While details surrounding their release remain undisclosed, it was previously reported that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N50 million.

The victims had been on campus to sit for supplementary examinations when they were abducted by armed Fulani herdsmen while eating at a food vendor’s shop, as described by the Chief Security Officer of the university, Sule Gani.

In a separate incident within Taraba State, the Principal and Examination Officer of Government Day Secondary School, GDSS, Salihu Dogo, Jalingo, have faced suspension over allegations of undermining the state’s free education policy. Accusations include the illicit sale of West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) and National Examination Certificate (NECO) exam slots to external candidates for personal gain. This suspension underscores the gravity of the breach of trust and the direct challenge posed to the state’s educational initiatives.
