Akpabio To Ministerial Nominee: Don’t Fall For Trump Question Trap

According to Ireporter Online, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday, advised ministerial nominee Kingsley Udeh (SAN) to refrain from answering any questions related to recent controversial remarks made by former United States President Donald Trump about Nigeria.

Udeh, who appeared before the Senate for screening, was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to replace Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, who resigned last month following controversies surrounding his academic qualifications.

Nnaji, who had represented Enugu State in the Federal Executive Council, stepped down after persistent public criticism and demands for a probe into the authenticity of his educational certificates, leaving the state without a ministerial representative.

Udeh, currently serving as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Enugu State, was recently conferred with the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

During the screening session, Akpabio, who presided over the proceedings, cautioned the nominee, saying, “The only question I will urge you to ignore is commenting on Trump.” His remark came amid ongoing debates in the National Assembly following Trump’s accusation that the Nigerian government was permitting “systematic persecution” and “genocide” against Christians — a claim that had deeply divided lawmakers earlier in the week.

Udeh introduced himself and responded to several questions before being asked to “take a bow and go,” in accordance with the Senate’s long-standing tradition for distinguished nominees.

Akpabio later put Udeh’s confirmation to a voice vote, asking, “Is it the will of the Senate that the nominee, being versatile and not responding to questions on Trump, should take a bow?” Following a resounding approval from senators, Akpabio declared, “The Ayes have it.”

Earlier in the week, the Senate President had tactfully avoided commenting on Trump’s claims, simply stating, “Who am I to reply Trump?”
