Amotekun: No More Open Grazing Crisis in Ondo, 170 Herders Arrested

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, has announced the successful resolution of the longstanding farmer-herder conflicts in the state.

Speaking on the development, the Corps Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, stated that the clashes had posed one of the most daunting challenges to the agency since its inception. He credited Amotekun’s proactive enforcement strategy and public engagement efforts as critical to restoring order.

Adeleye disclosed that within three years, the corps arrested 170 herders for violating the anti-open grazing law and impounded over 10,000 cows. The enforcement of this law, alongside a robust public awareness campaign, significantly reduced tensions that once plagued agricultural communities.

According to him, the violent disputes had previously led to fatalities and economic hardship, forcing many farmers to flee their land due to fears of kidnapping or attacks. The Amotekun commander explained that education and sensitization were prioritized for both farmers and herders to clearly define boundaries and responsibilities.

He noted, “We began with mass education for both herders and farmers, explaining the legal boundaries and encouraging peaceful coexistence. Though it was difficult, normalcy was restored within a year.”

This resolution has not only improved rural safety but also contributed to food security by enabling displaced farmers to return to their land.
