Anike Agbaje-Williams: The Trailblazing Voice Of Nigerian Women On TV
Anike Agbaje-Williams, widely celebrated as a pioneer of Nigerian broadcasting, remains an enduring symbol of courage, innovation, and breaking barriers. At a time when Nigeria’s media landscape was largely dominated by men, she emerged as a defining voice and face of a new era.
Born on October 23, 1936, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Agbaje-Williams’ journey into broadcasting began unexpectedly. After completing her education in Lagos and Ibadan, she joined the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation in 1955. Initially filling in for a colleague, her performance impressed supervisors and secured her a permanent position as a staff announcer.
Her historic breakthrough came in 1959 with the establishment of Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) in Ibadan, the first television station in Nigeria and Africa. Agbaje-Williams not only became a pioneer staff member but also made history as the first person to appear on television in the country. She further distinguished herself as Nigeria’s first female television broadcaster, earning the nickname “Double-First” for her trailblazing accomplishments.
Agbaje-Williams also became the first voice heard on Western Nigerian Broadcasting Service, Africa’s first commercial radio station. Throughout her career, she rose to become a producer and later Director of Programmes, shaping early television content with a focus on indigenous culture and storytelling. Her legacy opened doors for countless Nigerian women in journalism and media.
Anike Agbaje-Williams passed away on February 26, 2025, in Ibadan at the age of 88, leaving behind a profound and lasting influence on African broadcasting.
