According to Ireporter Online, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing alleged irregularities in the party’s recently concluded primaries.

Lawal alleged that the exercise was severely compromised in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, claiming that the process was manipulated to produce predetermined outcomes and undermine internal democracy within the party.

He described the alleged conduct as unacceptable, stating that it informed his decision to quit the party. In his words, “I am exiting the ADC because its just concluded primaries were at all levels massively rigged in favour of Kachalla Abubakar Atiku.”

Lawal further accused some party stakeholders of remaining silent over the alleged irregularities, describing it as a “conspiracy of silence” that he could not be part of. He also expressed concern that many members were treating the situation as normal.

Beyond his resignation, the former SGF declared his opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s reported presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 elections, arguing that such a move could inadvertently strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects. He also stressed that leadership choices should be guided by competence and national interest rather than sentiment or political loyalty.

Lawal added that he would be stepping back from active political engagement for now, stating that he would consult widely with allies before determining his next political direction.
