Battle For Ovia: Why Contesting Against Dennis Idahosa May Be Suicidal  Matters Arising By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah

The wait is finally here, every four years citizens have the right and privileges to elect their leaders for another four years, it is a process that involves party nomination and primaries before the general elections where the electorates would decide who best is suited for the job.

Presently aspirants jostling for the TRUST of the electorates have started their tour of party members and delegates soliciting their support. It is a tedious process that requires sound intellect and good health.

One electoral battle that has always drawn the attention of Edo citizens is the battle for Ovia Federal Constituency in the National Assembly. The reason that may not be far fetched is due to the high awareness of the voting populace.

The PDP held the position before the current lawmaker, Hon Dennis Idahosa against all odds upturned the table by defeating, Hon Omosede Igbinedion who happens to be the daughter of the Esama of the Benin Kingdom, Sir Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion.

It was a huge political statement by the relative unknown Dennis Idahosa who was simply referred to as the son of a Farmer.

To whom much is given much is expected, Dennis Idahosa has indeed held the trust bestowed upon him by his constituents dearly to his heart.

Dennis Idahosa has surpassed all human ramifications of performance as a Federal Lawmaker,  his works which I would not bother listing here are known by everyone including his fans, political family and political foes.

Presently Dennis Idahosa is the standard measurement of performance, be it legislative or executive, he has distinguished himself so well that across the Nation, Nigerians are using him as a template for performance.

Dennis can be likened to an INSTITUTION that works. Dennis Idahosa’s performance sheet is like a SPREADSHEET that is scattered everywhere, his legacies bequeathed to Ovia residents can be comparable to saying a governor or president has implanted enduring legacies for their people and therefore have a place in the HALL of FAME.

He has done very well even to the amazement of the naysayers and to the astonishment of the strongest of critics.

Why Contesting Against Dennis Idahosa May Be Counter-Productive:

The average Edo man has pride and a “large Ego” they detest oppression and complacency and waste no time in showing their disapproval during voting.

Ovia Federal constituency no doubt is in Edo State and the same rules apply. Why would Ovia constituents even think of changing Dennis Idahosa if not sending him to a higher position that can attract more patronage for constituents?

There is a popular English proverb that says, “You never miss the water till the well runs dry.” since the assumption of Dennis Idahosa as the people’s representative the well has never run dry and has been overflowing with so many benefits to the people.

For instance, while political aspirants are running Kiti Kata and can’t find a place to drop their cups after drinking water, Dennis Idahosa is busy commissioning projects week after week as if his life depends on delivering projects to his constituents.

The people know they would see him in their midst every week, either commissioning a project or listening to their complaints, Dennis Idahosa’s Constituency is not a stone’s throw from Benin City or Abuja but yet you can hardly know when the Federal Lawmaker is at Benin, Abuja or with his constituents.

Politics no doubt breeds competition and it is the inalienable right of individuals to contest against political office holders irrespective of the quality of performance or failure of the incumbent occupant.

Ovia’s case is not expected to be different only that in this case there is a “Caveat”, “a contest against Dennis Idahosa is a contest against the people.”

How do you want to campaign against someone who listens to the voice of the people irrespective of their demands?

A complaint about a fallen bridge leading to the inability of school children with no access to their community school and boom Dennis is constructing a bridge. How many governors do construct bridges?

A school pupil complained of no conducive school block to learn and boom Dennis constructs a school block of classrooms with full accessories to aid learning. Dennis in the LAST YEAR HAS CONSTRUCTED NO FEWER THAN TWENTY SCHOOLS.

His educational revolution is unparalleled, Dennis Idahosa has constructed three skills acquisition centres in the past 12 months alone making him one of the few lawmakers that have a permanent site for skills acquisition that can be accessed by indigents.

These projects are not personal and would outlive the lawmaker, what more can residents ask for other than the continuation of GUARANTEED performance.

“Teamwork is the secret that makes common people achieve uncommon results.”

Dennis Idahosa in reality cant do all these awesome deeds alone, the young man has taken the pains to put together a great team that is tasked with the responsibility of assisting him to meet the yearnings of the people.

It would be suicidal for Ovia residents to change a winning team, “The leaders of the team or organization set the tone and attitude.” Dennis is a great team leader and deserves a second term at the Green Chambers.
