Benin Residents Forced to Trek as Security Operatives Enforce IG’s No-Movement Order During Edo Election
On Saturday morning, security operatives in Benin City were firm in implementing the no-movement directive issued by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The order was strictly enforced as the Edo State governorship election commenced, leading to several residents being forced to trek to their destinations.
This stringent measure was part of the broader security efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly electoral process. The roads were largely deserted, with only security personnel and essential services allowed to move freely. Local residents, complying with the directive, were seen walking long distances to reach polling units or attend to essential activities.
Despite the challenges posed by the movement restrictions, the public largely welcomed the heavy security presence, hoping it would deter any form of electoral violence or disruptions during the election.
The Edo governorship election has drawn significant attention, with various stakeholders urging residents to exercise their voting rights peacefully. The enforcement of the no-movement order reflects the authorities’ commitment to maintaining order and safeguarding the integrity of the election process.
