Benin Market Traders Defy Police Restrictions Amidst Edo Governorship Election
Traders at the New Benin Market defied the police’s restriction of movement order to conduct brisk business early Saturday morning, just as the Edo State governorship election kicked off. Despite warnings from the authorities, market activities flourished as sellers and buyers continued their transactions undeterred.
The restriction, imposed to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process, did little to deter the traders, who saw the early morning as an opportunity to capitalize on eager buyers. The election day, which has drawn national attention, did not entirely halt the hustle and bustle of commerce in this key marketplace.
Local traders expressed the need to continue business, citing economic pressures as the driving force behind their decision. One vendor remarked, “We understand the importance of the election, but we also have families to feed.”
The scene at New Benin Market highlights the tension between civic duty and economic necessity, especially during critical political events. As voting unfolds, the traders’ defiance raises questions about the balance between enforcing order and understanding the daily struggles of the people.
