Benue Assembly Prolongs Suspension Of Two Lawmakers

The Benue State House of Assembly has approved a three-month extension of the suspension imposed on former Speaker Aondona Dajoh and former Majority Leader Saater Tiseer as legal proceedings involving the two legislators remain unresolved.

The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Berger Alfred after Majority Leader Thomas Dugeri, who represents Kwande West State Constituency, presented a motion seeking the extension. The proposal received backing from Deputy Chief Whip Simon Gabo, representing Mata State Constituency.

Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously resolved that the suspension of the two members would remain in effect until the lawsuits they instituted against the Assembly are either concluded by the court or voluntarily withdrawn. The resolution also stipulates that the suspension will continue for an additional three months in line with the Assembly’s position on the ongoing judicial process.

During the same plenary, the House also advanced legislative consideration of the Benue State Sports Marketing, Gaming and Lotteries Bill, 2026, after the proposed legislation successfully passed its second reading.

After members debated the bill, Speaker Berger Alfred directed that it be referred to the Joint House Committees on Finance, Youth and Sports for detailed scrutiny and legislative review before it is returned to the chamber for further consideration.
