Benue Gov Sacks Electoral Commission Chairman

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has approved the removal of the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Dr. John Chem. This decision follows a recommendation from the Benue State House of Assembly, which accused Dr. Chem of poor judgment in his role.

The Assembly’s resolution came on Wednesday, citing several concerns regarding Dr. Chem’s performance and decision-making abilities. According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, the Assembly’s primary accusation was that Dr. Chem lacked the good judgment necessary to make decisions that would appeal to the majority of stakeholders. Furthermore, the Assembly noted that Dr. Chem’s actions in office thus far had not aligned with the public interest.

In the statement released to journalists in Makurdi on Friday, Tersoo outlined the governor’s acceptance of the Assembly’s recommendation. “The Assembly accused the BSIEC chairman of lacking good judgement as to which decision will appeal to the greater majority of all stakeholders, and also that his actions so far in office fall short of the public interest,” the statement read. It further stated, “Governor Alia has accepted the resolutions and directed the Chairman of the commission to immediately hand over to the administrative secretary of the commission.”

The decision has sparked varied reactions from different quarters. Many have praised the governor’s prompt action, viewing it as a commitment to ensuring that public offices are managed efficiently and in the interest of the people. “This move by Governor Alia is a clear indication that he is committed to good governance and accountability,” said Mrs. Angela Ukoh, a political analyst in Makurdi. “It is important that those in positions of authority are held to the highest standards, and this decision sends a strong message.”

However, some have expressed concern about the potential implications for the state’s electoral process. Mr. James Agbo, a local community leader, expressed his reservations: “While it is crucial to ensure that the SIEC operates effectively, we must also be cautious about the timing of such changes. It is essential to maintain stability in our electoral system, especially with upcoming elections.”

Dr. Chem, who has not yet made a public statement regarding his removal, was appointed to the position with high expectations of upholding electoral integrity and fairness in the state.
