According to the latest CPI ranking, Nigeria scored 25 out of 100, marking a one-point increase from the previous year. This advancement places the country at the 145th position out of 180 nations and territories evaluated for perceived levels of public sector corruption.

The release of this information on the Transparency International website underscores Nigeria’s positive shift in the ongoing battle against corruption. The 2023 ranking reflects an improvement from the 150th position in 2022, showcasing the nation’s gradual progress in recent years.

In 2021, Nigeria held the 154th position with a score of 24 out of 100, maintaining its score from the previous year. Comparatively, the country scored 25 in 2020 and 26 in the 2019 assessment.

While this upward movement in the CPI is a significant indicator of Nigeria’s commitment to tackling corruption within the public sector, the score remains below the global average. This suggests that there is still work to be done in the fight against corruption.

The positive shift in the CPI ranking serves as an incentive for the government to continue its reformative measures and emphasizes the need to address corruption, strengthen institutions, and promote transparency and accountability.

François Valérian, Chair of Transparency International, commented on the report, stating, “Corruption will continue to thrive until justice systems can punish wrongdoing and keep governments in check. When justice is bought or politically interfered with, it is the people that suffer. Leaders should fully invest in and guarantee the independence of institutions that uphold the law and tackle corruption. It is time to end impunity for corruption.”

As of now, there has been no official response from the Nigerian authorities regarding the latest CPI report.
