The Port Harcourt refinery, which resumed crude oil processing on November 26 after years of inactivity, has sparked debate among Nigerians questioning its current blending operations instead of full crude refining.

Speaking at the commissioning of NUPENG Towers in Lagos on Wednesday, Kyari addressed the concerns, stating that blending is a vital component of refining processes globally. He explained that blending ensures products meet specific regional or national standards.

“If you don’t blend, you will produce off-spec products that could damage vehicles. Every refinery blends because specifications vary across countries, including the United States,” Kyari emphasized.

The refinery, owned by the Nigerian government, has been actively loading petroleum products for distribution and producing 1.4 million liters of petrol daily through blending operations.

Kyari invited skeptics to visit the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries to verify their operational status and observe ongoing activities.

In addition to defending the blending process, Kyari congratulated the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on completing its new headquarters, urging the union to maintain a cooperative relationship with the NNPC and the federal government.

Kyari’s remarks aim to dispel doubts and reaffirm the refinery’s contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector, while underlining the importance of standard practices in maintaining product quality.
