B*mb Attack On Akwa Ibom Correctional Centre Foiled By Police

According to Ireporter Online, the Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has successfully foiled a planned bomb attack targeting the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, recovering dangerous explosive materials in the process.

The incident was confirmed in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, who disclosed that the operation was triggered after credible intelligence was received from officials of the correctional facility.

Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from Uyo alongside other tactical teams to secure the environment and conduct a thorough sweep of the premises.

During the operation, security operatives reportedly recovered two 90mm explosive rounds, a burning fuse measuring about 45 centimetres, and several tools including a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two iron chisels, and a short conduit pipe, all discovered within the facility’s surroundings.

The EOD experts safely neutralised the explosives and ensured the area was cleared of any further threat, preventing what could have resulted in serious destruction or loss of lives. In response, security presence around the custodial centre and adjoining communities has been intensified, with increased patrols and stricter monitoring now in place.

Authorities have since launched a full-scale investigation to determine the origin of the explosives and identify those behind the attempted attack.

The police command reassured residents that the situation is under control and that no casualties were recorded. The public was also urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities.

The command further warned that it will not tolerate any attempt to undermine public safety, stressing its commitment to decisively deal with criminal elements threatening peace in the state.
