Bobrisky Arrives At Federal High Court To Face Money Laundering, Naira Abuse Charges
Controversial Nigerian social media personality and transgender figure, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, made his appearance at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, to face charges related to money laundering and the abuse of Nigeria’s currency, the Naira……READ ALSO Chidi Odinkalu Lambasts EFCC Over Bobrisky’s Arrest
After being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) earlier in the week, Bobrisky was granted administrative bail, which he was unable to fulfill due to stringent conditions.
Escorted by EFCC operatives and armed police, Bobrisky arrived at the court premises in a white Hiace Toyota bus around 9 am. The charges against him stem from a viral video where he was seen spraying Naira notes at a social event while a musician praised him.
The charges brought against Bobrisky include a six-count indictment alleging money laundering and Naira abuse. Specifically, he is accused of tampering with various sums of Naira notes at different social events between July 2023 and March 2024.
The EFCC alleges that Bobrisky, while trading under his company name Bob Express, failed to submit a declaration of the company’s activities to the Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering. The agency claims that significant sums of money were paid into the company’s account during this period, amounting to millions of Naira.
The prosecution, led by EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), maintains that Bobrisky’s actions contravene the Central Bank Act of 2007 and the Money Laundering (Prevention And Prohibition) Act.
As Bobrisky’s trial progresses, the case has drawn significant attention due to the controversial nature of the allegations and Bobrisky’s status as a prominent figure in Nigerian social media circles.
