George addressed the media during his speech titled “My Thoughts on The State of Our Country in the Last 25 Years: A Time to Chart A New Direction.” He reacted to a recent statement by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 Presidential candidate, who suggested he would drop his 2027 ambition if the party selected Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate.

“Our party has a grundnorm,” George stated, referring to the fundamental principle of power rotation embedded in the PDP’s constitution by the party’s founding fathers, including former Vice President Alex Ekwueme. “We have paid a big price for not following the rule. We have made mistakes, let us learn. It has cost us too much.”

He highlighted Section 7, Subsection 3C of the PDP constitution, which mandates adherence to zoning and rotation procedures for party positions and elective offices to ensure equitable power distribution. According to George, this principle was designed to prevent scenarios that could lead to a resurgence of military rule.

George explained that the founding fathers divided Nigeria into six geopolitical zones to balance the interests of both majority and minority tribes, thereby fostering a sense of inclusion and preventing political instability. He noted that the lack of adherence to this principle had historically led to coups and counter-coups due to disenfranchisement of minority groups.

“The top six positions in the land were shared among the six geopolitical zones for equity and justice,” George said, listing the positions as the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Chairman of the party. He emphasized that these positions should rotate every eight years between the northern and southern zones.

George concluded by asserting that the PDP’s deviation from this principle had caused internal divisions and contributed to its recent electoral defeat. He urged the party to realign with its foundational guidelines to ensure unity and success in future elections.
