BREAKING: Banana Entrepreneur Wins Ecuador Presidential Election (DETAILS)
At just 35 years old, banana entrepreneur Daniel Noboa is set to become the youngest president in Ecuador’s history, according to the head of the electoral authority CNE.
In the elections held on Sunday, Mr. Noboa, representing the center-right National Democratic Action alliance, secured a lead over leftist politician Luisa González, an associate of former president Rafael Correa, with 52.3 percent to 47.7 percent of the votes, with over 90 percent of ballots counted.
Mr. González graciously congratulated Mr. Noboa on his victory.
“Today we made history,” Mr Noboa said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
“We are going for a country… where promises do not remain in the electoral campaign and corruption is punished,” he added.
Approximately 82 percent of eligible voters participated in the election, as reported by CNE head Diana Atamaint.

A total of 13 million Ecuadorians were entitled to cast their votes in an election season marked by the tragic killing of one of the candidates, amidst a surge in nationwide crime.
Mr. Noboa inherits his father Alvaro Noboa’s extensive banana business empire.
The lead-up to Sunday’s elections was overshadowed by the untimely death of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who was fatally shot on August 9 after a campaign event in Quito. The government attributed his death to organized crime.
Ecuador functions as a transit point for cocaine, and multiple criminal syndicates vie for control of smuggling routes.
Mr. Villavicencio had pledged to combat corruption and crime had he assumed the presidency. He had exposed corruption during ex-president Correa’s tenure (2007-2017) alongside fellow journalist and friend Christian Zurita, who was nominated by his party, Construye (Build), as his replacement in the race.
Just last weekend, seven individuals believed to be connected to Mr. Villavicencio’s murder were discovered deceased in prison.
In the initial round of voting on August 20, González emerged as the frontrunner. However, none of the candidates secured the necessary majority to avoid a runoff.
The elections were moved up after conservative President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the National Assembly amid impeachment proceedings against him for alleged embezzlement.
