[BREAKING] Coup: Tinubu Notifies Nigerian Senate Of ECOWAS’ Decision To Deploy Military, Enforce No-flight Zone, Cut Off Electricity In Niger

President Bola Tinubu has conveyed the decisions made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding the recent military intervention in Niger. The ECOWAS decision was contained in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read during a plenary session on Friday.

As the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, Tinubu informed the distinguished Senate President and senators that ECOWAS condemns the coup in Niger entirely and is committed, alongside other members of the international community, to restoring a democratically elected government in Niger.

In pursuit of peace and the restoration of democracy, ECOWAS convened an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Governments on July 30 in Abuja. Following this meeting, the body issued a communique outlining the agreed-upon line of action to be taken by member states.

As the Chair of ECOWAS, Nigeria is tasked with leading the implementation of the directives outlined in the communique. The resolutions include the closure and monitoring of all land borders with Niger Republic, the reactivation of border drill exercises, cutting off electricity supply to Niger Republic, and mobilizing international support for the implementation of ECOWAS’ directives.

Additionally, Nigeria will cooperate with commercial and special flights into and from Niger Republic. Goods in transit to Niger Republic, especially from Lagos and eastern seaports, will also be blocked. Sensitization efforts will be undertaken to inform Nigerians of the imperative actions of ECOWAS, especially through social media channels.

Furthermore, ECOWAS resolved to ensure military build-up and deployment of personnel for military intervention to enforce compliance with the military junta.

As part of these measures, ECOWAS has enforced a no-flight zone over Niger, a significant move that includes air and land border closures, seen as a crucial response to the recent developments in Niger.

It is important to note that the implementation of these measures is aimed at restoring democratic governance in Niger and preventing further escalation of the political situation in the country.
