Breaking: Former Kwara SDP Gov Candidate Quits Party
According to Ireporter Online, the former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kwara State, Hakeem Oladimeji Lawal, has formally resigned his membership of the party.
Lawal made his decision public through a resignation letter dated January 27, 2026, which he later shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday. The letter was addressed to the ward leadership of the party in Magaji Aare Ward I, Ilorin.
In the letter, Lawal expressed gratitude to the SDP for granting him the opportunity to contest for the governorship of Kwara State. He described his time as the party’s flagbearer as a defining period that offered him significant political exposure and invaluable experience.
He also commended the party’s leadership, led by Alhaji AbdulAzeez Afolabi, and appreciated party members for their loyalty and support before, during, and after the election.
Explaining the reason for his exit, Lawal said the decision followed extensive consultations with his political associates and careful personal reflection. He noted that the move was informed by considerations surrounding the future of his supporters and his broader political aspirations.
According to him, stepping aside at this moment was necessary to allow for a reassessment of his political direction, stressing that the decision was taken in good faith and with deep conviction.
His resignation comes just days after he paid a courtesy visit to the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of the All Progressives Congress, at the governor’s residence in Admiralty Villa.
Lawal has, however, not disclosed his next political move or indicated whether he intends to join another political party.
