Breaking: Group Demands N30-Billion Compensation For Plateau Attack-Victims

In October 2017, suspected terrorists attacked Nkiendoro community. Community leaders claim that military personnel from Operation Safe Haven, who were stationed in the area, instructed residents to seek refuge at a primary school. The residents were subsequently locked in a classroom where 30 people were killed without any intervention from the security forces.

At a recent event unveiling a memorial signpost listing the names of the victims, Barrister Redzie Jugo, the team lead of the Srarina Initiative, stated: “On 15th October, 2017, thirty individuals thinking that they were being led to safety by military personnel of Operation Safe Haven into a classroom and they were gunned down by terrorists. They were not safeguarded by those who were supposed to take care of them.”

The group has been calling for accountability since the incident occurred. Jugo emphasized the need for an investigative panel to identify and prosecute the military personnel involved. “This year, we are reiterating the call, by calling on government to setup an investigative panel, to find out those who perpetrated this dastardly act, so that they can be brought to book. And we also want compensation to be paid for all the lives that were lost in that incident, to the tune of N1 billion per person.”

Isaiah Nshe, a community leader, also demanded justice: “We are calling on the military hierarchy to ensure that those found to be complicit in the Nkiendoro incident are brought to justice, to serve as deterrent to others.”

Ladi Jasper, representing the women wing of the Irigwe Development Association, highlighted the community’s ongoing struggles: “Since this incident occurred, nothing has been done to our community; we are calling on the Federal Government to consider us, because we are also Nigerians. Many people in this community have lost loved ones, like their husbands, parents, and children in this particular incident.”

The Srarina Initiative commended recent efforts by Operation Safe Haven to court-martial erring officers and urged for continued accountability within the military.

The group’s call for justice and compensation underscores the community’s plea for recognition and support from the Federal Government.
