Breaking News: Former President Babangida Endorses Two-Party System For Nigeria’s Political Progress

The former military leader, who governed Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, argued that a two-party system would bring cost savings and alleviate problems associated with a multi-party state.
Babangida further raised concerns about Nigeria potentially moving towards a one-party state, emphasizing that Nigerians would resist such a development.
“I have experienced military rule, and the Nigerians I know won’t accept a one-party state. I have a military background, and I understand that a dictatorship cannot thrive in a civil society.
The Nigerians I know won’t allow it; they will resist it. You can say, ‘Okay, I don’t want it,’ and forget about it.”
Babangida highlighted historical instances where Nigeria leaned towards a two-party system after gaining independence, emphasizing the practical benefits of such a political structure.
He also suggested that, in addition to two major political parties, the system could accommodate independent candidates, provided they have enough support.
“One can run as an independent candidate if they have sufficient support,” he concluded.
