According to a statement from the Russian Embassy, the discussion centered on diplomatic relations and issues affecting the Korean Peninsula. Both envoys shared their optimism regarding Nigeria’s plans to restore its diplomatic presence in Pyongyang.

Matsegora expressed his support for the reopening, wishing Nigeria success in its efforts, and assured the Nigerian mission of his full assistance. The Russian Ambassador also commended North Korea’s diplomatic corps, despite its small size, for its cohesion and friendly approach to international relations.

North Korea had implemented strict border controls in early 2020 due to the pandemic, which led to the withdrawal of many foreign embassies and international organizations. However, as of August 2023, the country began to gradually reopen its borders, paving the way for nations like Nigeria to reestablish diplomatic ties.

This decision comes amid continued international scrutiny of North Korea’s actions, including reports linking Nigeria to potential arms purchases from North Korean entities. While the Nigerian government did not confirm these allegations, the reopening of its embassy is likely to bring renewed attention to Nigeria-North Korea relations.
