BREAKING: NLC Reacts To N500bn Palliatives
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strongly criticized the Federal Government’s plan to distribute N500 billion as palliatives to Nigerians and government officials to offset the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
NLC’s President, Joe Ajaero, condemned the government’s approach, describing it as “robbing the people of Nigeria to pay and feed the rich.”
The labour organization expressed disappointment that instead of reciprocating the goodwill of Nigerian workers, the Federal Government was pursuing a dictatorial path.

They particularly denounced the government’s proposal to obtain an additional N500 billion external loan from the World Bank to carry out a so-called palliative measure.
NLC pointed out that the proposal, which includes paying N8,000 to each of the supposed 12 million poorest households for six months, was an insult to the collective intelligence of Nigerians.
They criticized the idea of rewarding National Assembly members with N70 billion and the judiciary with N36 billion, describing it as an insensitive diversion of public funds.
The NLC expressed concern that these payments to other arms of government might be an attempt to bribe them into accepting the government’s actions. They lamented that the government, within a short time in office, had inflicted immense hardship on the people, and this proposed plan favored the rich in public office at the expense of the poor.
The labor body strongly disapproved of the government’s intention to use such measures, stating that it seemed to be taking money from the poorest Nigerians to enrich the already wealthy. T
hey criticized the meager sum allocated to millions of households while significant sums were earmarked for a few members of the National Assembly and the judiciary.
The NLC suggested that the executive council members might also receive a substantial portion of the remaining amount.
