BREAKING: NLC Speaks On Agreement With Govt To Suspend Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that it has not reached any agreement with the government to defer its planned strike. This statement was made by Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, on Tuesday.

Mr. Upah refuted a statement by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and clarified that the NLC has not scheduled any meeting with the government that could potentially lead to the postponement of the proposed strike.

He emphasized, “We do not have any agreement with the government to suspend the planned strike action. Neither do we have any date for a meeting with government that may lead to the suspension of the proposed strike.”

Mr. Upah also pointed out that this matter transcends the Ministry, and this should have been evident to them during their most recent meeting.

The NLC further contested the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s stance on the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

The NLC acknowledged the efforts made by the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Barrister Simon Lalong, in securing the release of the executives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers from unlawful detention. However, they objected to the Ministry referring to these executives as factional leaders, asserting that they were duly elected into office. The NLC also urged the police and those responsible for their ordeal to cease such disgraceful and shameful behavior and to reconsider their actions.

They emphasized the need to resist impunity for democracy to hold meaning and urged all parties to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.
