This incident occurred less than a week after a leading candidate for the presidency was shot at a campaign rally ahead of the upcoming elections.

Pedro Briones, a member of the Citizen Revolution Party linked to former president Rafael Correa, and a prominent figure in the province of Esmeraldas bordering Colombia, was killed by unidentified gunmen.

Luisa Gonzalez, a significant presidential contender and former associate of Correa, expressed her condolences on social media, stating, “My thoughts are with the family of comrade Pedro Briones, the latest victim of violence.” She also referred to Ecuador’s current state as its “bloodiest period” and criticized the government’s ineffectiveness, alleging that organized crime groups had taken control of the nation.

Rafael Correa, the former president, also shared his condolences online, exclaiming, “They have assassinated another of our colleagues in Esmeraldas. Enough is enough!”

Although the police and government have yet to confirm the incident, Ecuadorian media reported that Briones was shot at his residence in San Mateo by two assailants on a motorcycle who subsequently fled the scene.

This killing follows the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio, a prominent journalist and centrist presidential candidate, on August 9 in Quito. Villavicencio, known for his anti-corruption crusade, was shot after leaving a campaign event while he was in second place in the polls. One of his significant achievements as a journalist was exposing former President Correa’s involvement in a case, resulting in Correa’s conviction in absentia.

Much of Ecuador has been under a state of emergency, and President Guillermo Lasso has attributed Villavicencio’s killing to organized crime. As part of the investigation into the assassination, six Colombians were arrested, and one was killed by the candidate’s bodyguards shortly after the attack.
