Breaking: TCN Confirms National Grid Fully-Restored After Collapse (Details)
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the full restoration of the national grid following a partial collapse that occurred on Saturday.
In a statement released on Sunday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the grid was restored at approximately 9:57 p.m. on Saturday. The incident, which started at around 3:09 p.m., caused significant disruptions across the country.
“Operators commenced restoration efforts immediately after the incident,” Mbah stated. “By 9:57 p.m. on Saturday, the entire part of the grid that was affected was successfully restored.”
Mbah explained that this was the third partial disturbance and the first total disturbance of the grid in 2024. The disturbance was suspected to have been triggered by the unexpected tripping of three units of a power generating station, which suddenly removed 313 Megawatts from the grid. This caused system instability and resulted in the loss of bulk supply to a section of the national grid.
“The system operator reacted to the sudden drop in generation, which led to a dip in frequency,” Mbah continued. “The system operator did this by islanding a section of the grid, including the Ibom Power Station, which allowed the company to continue feeding Uyo, Aba, Itu, Eket, Calabar, and other areas, even when the other section of the grid had no supply.”
This prompt response and effective management of the situation helped minimize the impact and ensured a swift restoration of power to the affected areas.
