The collapse of the national grid, the first occurrence in 2024, plunged the country into darkness for hours, sparking concerns and inconveniences across the nation.

As the news of the power outage reverberated, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, shed light on the cause – a partial grid disturbance that struck around 11:21 hrs. The incident specifically impacted the Ibom power islanded, affecting transmission substations in Eket, Ekim, Itu, and Uyo.

Mbah attributed the grid collapse to lingering gas constraints, citing it as the root cause of the erratic power supply experienced since January 2024. However, in a remarkable display of efficiency, TCN swiftly initiated the restoration process, successfully bringing the grid back to life.

“Grid Fully Restored,” Mbah proclaimed, signaling the end of the blackout saga. Prior to the incident, the total generation on the grid stood at 3,901.25 MW at 08:00Hours, just over three hours before the partial collapse.

The National Control Center’s report revealed that a moment before the disturbance, Sapele Steam & Egbin Substations suffered a loss of 29.32MW & 343.84MW at 11:20:14Hrs & 11:20:17Hrs, culminating in a total loss of 373.16MW. This, combined with ongoing gas constraints, created an imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance.

With the grid now fully restored, TCN’s swift response has not only alleviated the immediate blackout crisis but also highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by gas constraints on grid flexibility and stability. The nation can breathe a sigh of relief as lights flicker back to life, marking the end of this electrifying episode.
