Obaseki Brushes Off Makinde’s Exit: Edo Election Momentum Unaffected Amid PDP Ward Congress Turmoil
In a twist leading up to the PDP’s governorship primary election in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki remains undeterred as Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor and chairman of the party’s committee for ward congresses, abruptly relinquishes his position….READ MORE
The move comes amid allegations of irregularities in the nomination of electoral officers, adding a layer of tension to the political landscape.
Expressing his reaction on Sunday, Obaseki deemed Makinde’s resignation unfortunate but emphasized that it would not compromise the authenticity of the ongoing electoral process. The six-person committee, entrusted with overseeing congresses in each of Edo State’s 192 wards to nominate the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the September 21 election, continues its work despite the setback.
Makinde’s departure was fueled by claims of irregularities, including the alleged presence of the Edo State House of Assembly Speaker leading the team of Electoral Officers in his own Local Government Area, Owan West.
Obaseki, speaking to the press after the PDP Ward Congress in Ward 4 of Oredo Local Government Area, expressed resilience in the face of the unfolding drama. He stated, “It is unfortunate that Makinde withdrew, there are three governors, and he is only one of three, so withdrawing does not really remove the credibility of the process.”
Highlighting the significance of active participation, Obaseki added, “What makes a process credible is the quality of the participation. You can see for yourself. So it is unfortunate that Governor Makinde had to take such a decision, but I hope that all our efforts to continue to unify the party and pacify all players would continue.”
Undeterred by the turbulence, Obaseki affirmed his commitment to PDP’s role in shaping the country’s political landscape. The impressive turnout at the ward congress showcased over 600 participants, reflecting a politically conscious electorate. As Edo State gears up for the main election, Obaseki remains optimistic about the party’s influence in the political arena.
