TCN Blames Dim Power On Gas Drought: Nigerians Left In The Dark As Gas Shortage Hits Grid”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially acknowledged the power crisis affecting consumers nationwide, attributing the poor power supply to a shortage of gas.

The TCN confirmed the report by The PUNCH, emphasizing a gradual decline in available power generation due to constraints in gas supply to power-generating companies.

In a statement released on Thursday, the TCN outlined the impact of gas shortages on the quantum of bulk power available for transmission to electricity distribution companies across the country.

Nigerians have been expressing their frustration with low power supply since December 2023, and distribution companies, in turn, have been vocal about their limited allocations from generating companies.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company echoed the TCN’s assertion, highlighting that the gas shortage is a major factor contributing to the persistently poor power supply.

TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated, “TCN is doing everything possible in collaboration with stakeholders in the power sector to ensure that it continues to keep the grid intact despite the current low power generated into the system.”

As the load on the grid diminishes due to gas constraints, the TCN emphasized its commitment to working with stakeholders to gradually increase electricity supply as gas availability improves at thermal plants.

Mbah pleaded with consumers to bear with them during this challenging period, assuring that efforts are underway to enhance the power supply through distribution companies.

With gas-fired grids in the country struggling to receive sufficient supply, the TCN’s acknowledgment sheds light on the root cause of the power predicament, leaving many Nigerians in the dark and underscoring the urgency of addressing the gas shortage to alleviate the ongoing power crisis.
