Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the mutineers who seized power in Niger, has held a meeting with a delegation of religious leaders from Nigeria. During this meeting, Tchiani emphasized the necessity of lifting the sanctions imposed against Niamey.

Ali Lamine Zeine, the head of Niger’s rebel military government, conveyed this information on Sunday, as reported by Sputnik.

According to Zeine, Tchiani instructed the religious leaders to communicate the desired developments in the coming days, specifically the lifting of what he described as inhumane and unacceptable measures.

The new authorities in Niger are reportedly open to mediation efforts aimed at normalizing the situation.

The coup in Niger occurred on July 26, resulting in the ousting and detention of President Mohamed Bazoum by his own guard, led by Tchiani. In response to the coup, the Economic Community of West African Nations (ECOWAS) took significant measures, including suspending all financial aid to Niger, freezing rebel assets, imposing a ban on commercial flights to and from the country, and closing all borders.

ECOWAS set a one-week ultimatum for the coup leaders to reinstate Bazoum and restore order, warning of possible military intervention if the demands were not met. This ultimatum expired on the previous Sunday.

In response to the situation, ECOWAS held a second emergency summit, where it announced the activation of a multinational standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger.

Both France and the United States have expressed support for ECOWAS’ decision.
