The duo, sidelined due to fitness issues during the group stage, has now been declared fit and ready to contribute to Cameroon’s campaign.
Cameroon, finishing second in Group C, faced challenges in the group stage but managed to secure four points with one win, one draw, and one defeat. The absence of Aboubakar and Njie was felt keenly, prompting speculation about their potential impact on the team’s performance.
Coach Rigobert Song, recognizing the importance of the two players, opted to retain them in the squad despite their initial fitness concerns.
The announcement of their return by the Cameroonian Football Federation via social media has sparked enthusiasm among football enthusiasts in Cameroon.
“The return to collective training of Vincent Aboubakar and Clinton Njie, now available for the rest of the competition,” declared the football body on its official Facebook page.
Aboubakar and Njie, both having played crucial roles in Cameroon’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations victory, have a history of scoring against Nigeria in past encounters. However, the Super Eagles, boasting one of the best defenses in the 2023 AFCON, remain confident in their ability to face the challenge.
The highly anticipated round of 16 clash between these West African football giants is scheduled for Saturday, January 27, at 9 p.m. Football fans are gearing up for an intense encounter as both teams vie for a spot in the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.
