Canada Doubles Temporary Resident Visas In 2022  

The latest figures from Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveal an impressive increase  in the number of foreign nationals who received temporary resident visas (TRV) in Canada last year. The  bulk of these visas were issued for work and study purposes. 

In 2022, just over 3 million TRVs were issued, which is twice the number issued in 2021, with a significant  proportion of the increase attributed to the Canadian government’s commitment to assisting Ukrainian  residents fleeing their war-torn country through the special CUAET program. 

The top countries of origin for TRV recipients in 2022 were Ukraine, India, China, the Philippines, Nigeria,  Mexico, Colombia, France, and Vietnam. 

Canada, with a population of just over 39 million and the second-largest landmass, is seeking to increase  its population through a range of federal and provincial economic immigration programs. Provincial  immigration ministers have been granted additional spaces to select candidates who meet their economic  needs. 

For example, Saskatchewan, which was previously allocated 6,000 spaces, will now receive 8,500 spaces  over the next two years, while Alberta, which received 6,500 spaces in 2022, will be granted 9,750 spaces  to support its growing industries in IT, hospitality, healthcare, and various trades. 

As a result, Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP) have now surpassed the Federal Government’s Express  Entry program, providing candidates with another option to gain permanent residence.
