Canada Unveils Fresh Immigration Pathways For Nigerians, Others

Information published on Canada’s official immigration platform indicates that the 2026 Express Entry categories will prioritise professionals with Canadian work experience. The focus will include medical doctors, researchers and senior managers who have previously worked in the country. The categories will also extend to transport workers and skilled military recruits holding job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces.

The move is aimed at reinforcing critical industries while addressing workforce gaps that continue to affect economic productivity. The development signals Canada’s sustained effort to draw competent professionals from across the globe, including Nigeria, in support of economic growth and innovation-driven expansion.

In a separate development in the United States, President Donald Trump’s border enforcement chief, Tom Homan, announced that the controversial immigration enforcement operation known as Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota will be concluded. Speaking to reporters, Homan disclosed that President Trump had approved his request to wind down the operation, noting that he would remain in the state temporarily to oversee a smooth withdrawal.

Homan described the operation as highly successful, citing the arrest of more than 4,000 undocumented immigrants, including individuals convicted of rape and other serious sexual offences who are now facing deportation. He maintained that Immigration and Customs Enforcement will continue its operations in Minnesota even after the surge ends.

The enforcement campaign, however, sparked nationwide protests following the deaths of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, during encounters with immigration officers. The announcement to end the operation came shortly before Minnesota and federal officials testified at a Capitol Hill hearing examining the administration’s immigration policies.

Homan credited the operation’s outcomes to what he described as unprecedented cooperation between federal agents and local law enforcement authorities. He also noted that local officials intensified their response to protesters, whom he characterised as public safety threats, while local jails increased communication with immigration authorities regarding the release of individuals under federal monitoring.
