This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” called for immediate action and acknowledgment of the universal need for freedom and justice. In Nigeria, however, the celebration was tinged with concern as both the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) issued a joint statement condemning ongoing human rights violations in the country.
Despite nearly 25 years of continuous democratic governance in the Fourth Republic, the statement highlights persistent challenges, including unlawful detentions, disappearances, malicious prosecutions, and the misuse of legislation and law enforcement. Furthermore, media freedom remains under threat, with press gagging, media censorship, and state control of public broadcasters continuing to infringe upon Nigerians’ right to free expression.
In reflecting on this Human Rights Day, the call is clear: Nigerians must be allowed to breathe freely, their rights respected, and their voices heard without fear of repression.
