Former England international striker Jamie Vardy has recalled his experience of playing against Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, describing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as a player unlike anyone else he had faced during his career.

According to Ireporter Online, Vardy, who also faced Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo during his playing career, said Messi’s extraordinary close control and ability to manipulate the ball made him extremely difficult to contain.

The former Leicester City striker said he found himself watching Messi during the game because of the Argentine’s remarkable ability to keep possession and move with the ball as though it were attached to his feet.

Vardy admitted that Messi’s performance left him and his teammates struggling to find an effective way to stop him.

“I’ve played against Cristiano Ronaldo, but Messi is different. I was on the pitch just looking at him. The ball was like a magnet to his feet, and there was nothing we could do to stop him. I just told him, ‘Well done,’” Vardy said.

The former Premier League striker’s comments highlight the admiration Messi has earned from opponents who have faced him at the highest level.

Vardy’s assessment also reflects Messi’s reputation for exceptional close control, dribbling and his ability to influence matches even when defenders attempt to restrict his movement and space.

Having played against two of football’s most celebrated stars, Vardy’s comparison offers another insight into the unique qualities that have distinguished Messi throughout his illustrious career.
