A Nigerian lady has sparked a heated conversation about relationships, marriage and financial responsibilities after arguing that men who expect women to perform traditional wife duties should also be prepared to provide financially for the household.

According to Ireporter Online, the woman made the remarks in a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, where she claimed that an increasing number of Nigerian men are now seeking women who are financially established and capable of contributing significantly to a relationship.

She described some of the men as “gold diggers,” arguing that wealthy women are increasingly becoming attractive to men who want partners capable of providing financial support.

The lady further questioned the expectation that a woman who earns more than her husband should also be solely responsible for domestic duties such as cooking, washing plates, caring for children and maintaining the home.

According to her, financial responsibility should be considered when couples decide how to divide household duties.

She said that if she were the higher-earning partner and was responsible for providing for the family, she would not automatically accept the expectation of handling all traditional household responsibilities.

“I’ve said it before: most Nigerian men are gold diggers. They’re not going for girls that do not have anything to offer anymore. Nigerian men are actively seeking out women that have things to offer, rich women,” she said.

She added that a man who does not contribute financially should be prepared to take on more domestic responsibilities.

“If I have money and my husband doesn’t have, he’s now expecting me to wash plates? Oga, you will wash plates. If you don’t have money, you will wash plates,” she stated.

The woman argued that she would not be willing to combine financial provision with the full burden of traditional domestic responsibilities.

“Because I will not provide, come home, bear children for you, keep your home, and wash plates. So, if you want to avoid all of those things, have money and provide,” she added.

Her comments have reignited conversations about changing gender roles, financial expectations and the division of labour within modern Nigerian marriages.

While some people believe household responsibilities should be shared regardless of who earns more, others argue that couples should consider each partner’s financial and non-financial contributions when deciding how duties should be divided.

The debate also highlights the changing expectations surrounding marriage as more women become financially independent and contribute substantially to household expenses.
