In a statement released on Friday, the French Ministry of Defense confirmed that a contingent of 120 soldiers had already departed Chad and returned to France. This move comes just 10 days after French fighter jets also exited the Sahel region for good.

Chad had long served as a crucial part of France’s military presence in Africa and was its last stronghold in the Sahel. However, after a series of military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, France was forced to withdraw from these nations.

On November 28, 2024, Chad announced it would end its decades-long defense agreement with Paris, marking a significant shift in the relationship between the two countries.

“At noon, 120 French soldiers boarded an Airbus A330 Phoenix MRTT at the N’Djamena military airport, heading back to France,” the ministry said on its official Facebook page.

While the French army, which previously had around 1,000 troops in Chad, has yet to comment on the matter, the departure of the soldiers on Friday took place in the presence of Chadian military officials, highlighting the deep cooperation the two nations had shared in security matters.

This move also coincides with a broader trend in the Sahel, where Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, led by military juntas, will officially withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 29, 2025, signaling growing rifts within the regional bloc.
