Corps Members Rejoice! FG Unveils Massive N77,000 Monthly Allowance Starting July 2024

This announcement was made through a statement from Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Wednesday. The approval was detailed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by Chairman Mr. Ekpo Nta, in accordance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Prior to this increase, corps members received a monthly stipend of N33,000, following a minimum wage adjustment to N30,000 in 2019.

According to reports from PUNCH Online, President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Bill into law on July 29, 2024, which set the minimum wage at N70,000.

In light of the new minimum wage, there had been speculation regarding a potential increase in the allowance for corps members. However, the NYSC management emphasized that any change in the corps members’ pay would be determined by the Federal Government.

In her statement, Embu noted that the NYSC Director General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, had previously visited the Chairman to advocate for improved welfare for corps members.

The Director General expressed gratitude to the government for this gesture, highlighting its significance in providing relief to corps members and boosting their morale to enhance their service to the nation.

The statement conveyed, “The Federal Government has approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This decision aligns with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, as indicated in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.”

Additionally, “The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had previously conducted an advocacy visit to the Chairman, requesting a comprehensive welfare package for corps members. He expresses gratitude to the Federal Government for this timely gesture and remains optimistic that it will provide necessary support to corps members while motivating them to contribute even more in their service to the nation.”
