Bongo Family Orchestrated Coup To Maintain Power By Proxy – Opposition Lambasts Coup, Claims Election Victory
Albert Ondo Ossa, Gabon’s main opposition candidate in the recent presidential election, has claimed victory in the election while dismissing the coup that occurred shortly after the announcement of the incumbent president’s win as “a disappointment” and “a family affair.”
Ossa, an economics professor, stated that he considers himself the rightful winner of the presidential election and referred to both the election outcome and the military takeover as “two coups in one.”
He vowed to use constitutional means to contest the election outcome.
Ossa’s claim comes after a dozen soldiers announced the annulment of the election and the dissolution of all state institutions in a coup on national television.

They cited “irresponsible and unpredictable governance” and flawed election preparation as reasons for their actions.
The ousted president was detained by the coup leaders, most of whom belonged to the Republican Guard. Brice Nguema, leader of that unit and a cousin to the deposed president, was named transitional leader.
Ossa criticized the coup, labeling it “a disappointment” and a “palace revolution” rather than a genuine coup d’état.
He expressed skepticism about the new leadership, referring to Nguema as a “little Bongo” and suggesting that the Bongo family orchestrated the coup to maintain power by proxy.
While citizens initially celebrated the coup, Ossa believed that the population would soon realize that the Bongo family remained in power, albeit indirectly.
He pledged to prioritize diplomatic channels to ensure the return of republican order rather than calling for street demonstrations.
The situation in Gabon remains complex and fluid, with political uncertainty and competing claims to legitimacy.
