A government report has uncovered serious irregularities in Zamfara State’s 2023 Hajj committee, including the deliberate inclusion of known terrorists in the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

The report also alleges embezzlement of funds, lack of proper documentation, improper reduction of pilgrims’ allowances, and other corrupt practices among officials.

This revelation comes after a previous report by PREMIUM TIMES revealed the arrest of terrorists, their wives, and informants returning from Saudi Arabia at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport in Sokoto.

The 2023 Hajj delegation committee submitted a detailed report to the state governor, Dauda Lawal, recommending a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s Hajj Commission (ZAHCOM). The committee’s chairman, Musa Mallaha, reported that ZAHCOM officials not only allowed criminals to participate in the Hajj exercise but also engaged in various forms of financial misconduct.

The governor expressed his dismay over the misuse of pilgrims’ and public funds and missing pilgrims’ deposits. He pledged to implement the recommendations of the committee, which cover various aspects of the Hajj exercise.

The report also acknowledged some achievements, including the successful repatriation of 3,102 pilgrims to Nigeria and the coordination with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.
