CUPP Declares Tinubu Has No Authority to Remove Governor Fubara Under State of Emergency
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy. CUPP argued that the move, which occurred on Tuesday night, seems politically motivated and reflects poorly on the president’s intentions………READ MORE
In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Peter Ameh, the group expressed concern over the implications of Tinubu’s actions on the nation’s democratic principles. The statement criticized the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara and the appointment of a sole administrator, emphasizing that such actions violate the Constitution and undermine democratic values.
CUPP further questioned the selective use of the state of emergency decree in Rivers State, pointing out that other states facing similar or even more severe security issues were overlooked. The Constitution, CUPP asserted, only allows for a governor’s removal through impeachment, death, resignation, or the completion of their tenure, not through presidential suspension.
The group also warned that Tinubu’s actions represent an unconstitutional overreach of executive power, setting a dangerous precedent that could destabilize Nigeria’s democracy. CUPP called for Nigerians to challenge this unlawful move, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights.
Additionally, the statement criticized the president for placing full blame on Governor Fubara for the political crisis while neglecting the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. This omission, according to CUPP, suggests bias and could undermine the president’s credibility, raising doubts about his commitment to fairness.
The organization concluded by urging the judiciary and the Nigerian people to act decisively in defending the nation’s democracy.
