Rivers Crisis: Why Fubara Ignored Tinubu – Tonye Cole

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 Rivers State election, Tonye Cole, has offered insight into why Governor Siminalayi Fubara may have ignored President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the ongoing political crisis in the state…………READ MORE

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu expressed concern over the situation in Rivers, accusing Fubara of demolishing the State House of Assembly and declaring a state of emergency in the state. The President stated that his efforts to mediate a peaceful resolution were largely ignored.

Reacting to this, Cole stated that if both parties disregarded Tinubu’s interventions, then “both sides should be punished.” However, he noted that the President specifically accused Fubara and his team of ignoring him.

Cole further suggested two possible reasons why Fubara may have disregarded Tinubu’s intervention:

  1. Unfair Conditions – The governor may have felt that the terms proposed by the President were biased and not in his favor.
  2. Irrelevant Solution – Fubara might have believed that Tinubu’s resolution did not address the core issues of the crisis.

Cole emphasized that a state governor ignoring a sitting president is a serious matter, suggesting that Fubara’s actions could have been driven by dissatisfaction with the proposed settlement.

The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened in recent months, with pro-Wike lawmakers and Fubara’s supporters clashing over governance and control of the state legislature. The declaration of a state of emergency has further intensified political tensions.
