producing 500,000 barrels per day (bpd), aims to increase this to 650,000 bpd by June 2025. However, NNPC’s domestic crude allocation, which is only sufficient for 350,000 bpd of local consumption, falls short of the refinery’s needs. Despite the ongoing naira-for-crude agreement, officials confirm that more crude oil will need to be sourced internationally to meet the target.

While NNPC has faced difficulties in providing enough feedstock for the refinery, the project continues to be one of the largest of its kind globally. “The refinery game is for the ‘big boys,’” a consultant emphasized, noting the Dangote refinery’s massive capacity and its impact on international fuel markets.

In response to the gap in supply, Dangote officials are also building eight additional storage tanks to accommodate more imported crude, increasing the refinery’s storage capacity by 41.67%.

As part of Nigeria’s growing refining capacity, Dangote, along with other refineries such as Port Harcourt and Warri, will need a combined 770,500 bpd of crude oil daily in 2025 to meet domestic fuel demands. The increasing reliance on crude imports highlights the country’s struggle to balance local supply and growing refining needs.
