Death of Kano athletes a national tragedy, must be investigated – Ganduje
Former Kano State Governor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 22 members of the Kano State sports delegation who perished in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje described the accident—which occurred at Dakatsalle near Kura Local Government Area—as a devastating loss, not just for Kano, but for the entire nation.
“This is a deeply sorrowful moment. These young athletes travelled in the spirit of unity, patriotism, and excellence to represent our state and nation. To lose them in such a tragic and untimely manner is a devastating national loss,” he said.
Ganduje paid tribute to the deceased athletes, whom he described as dedicated, promising youths who symbolized the future of Nigerian sports and the pride of Kano State.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and the Nigerian sports community, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
The APC National Chairman also called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and emphasized the urgent need to improve transportation safety protocols, particularly for athletes involved in national assignments.
“May Almighty Allah (SWT) grant the families the strength to bear this irreparable loss and grant eternal rest to the departed souls,” Ganduje concluded.
