Trump Introduces 10% Tariff Following Supreme Court Rejection Of Previous Trade Measures

US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP

According to Ireporter Online, United States President Donald Trump announced a new 10 per cent tariff on imports from all countries on Friday, hours after the Supreme Court struck down his previous tariffs as unlawful.

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority by using emergency powers to impose the initial tariffs. In response, the president signed an executive order revoking the invalidated tariffs and issued a proclamation introducing a 10 per cent duty on most imported goods for a period of 150 days. Exemptions were made for critical minerals, metals, and energy products.

Trump criticized the court’s decision at the White House, describing certain justices as lacking the courage to act in the nation’s interest. He accused the court of yielding to foreign influence without presenting evidence and called the ruling “unpatriotic” and disloyal to the Constitution.

The president invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, becoming the first U.S. leader to use the provision, which allows tariffs of up to 15 per cent for 150 days to address international payment issues. Legal analysts caution that the new tariffs could also face judicial challenges, and any extension beyond the 150-day limit would require Congressional approval.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that the court’s decision produced mixed results but maintained that the administration intends to restore similar tariff levels through alternative measures. He noted that while the ruling reduced the president’s leverage, it also affirmed his authority to impose a full embargo.

The court’s decision leaves unresolved questions regarding the $133 billion collected from American importers under the previously struck-down tariffs, which were deemed based on an “incorrect interpretation” of the law.
