Doyin Okupe Defends Council of State’s Vote of Confidence in President Tinubu’s Leadership

Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the Obi-Datti Campaign Council, has spoken out following the Council of State’s recent vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership. Okupe’s comments have stirred conversation across social media platforms, particularly on Twitter.

In a tweet shared on Wednesday from his verified Twitter account, Okupe clarified the role and significance of the Council of State meetings. He described these gatherings as constitutional meetings where past and current leaders convene, with the current President presiding over the session. According to Okupe, the Council serves as a platform for the sitting President to present the administration’s achievements and challenges to former leaders, who, in turn, provide advisory support.

Okupe emphasized that former Presidents and leaders attending the Council of State meetings are not expected to engage in partisan politics or activism. He stated, “When people talk about ‘speaking truth to power,’ they must understand that in the company of such elders, radicalism has no place.” He further highlighted that these meetings are characterized by candid and frank discussions conducted in a mature and respectful atmosphere.

Drawing on his experience, Okupe noted, “I have had the privilege of attending several Council of State meetings in the past as an observer in my capacity as a presidential aide. These discussions are never confrontational or derogatory towards the presiding officer, out of sheer respect for that exalted office, which these leaders themselves once held.”

Okupe also addressed the criticism directed at the vote of confidence passed on President Tinubu’s leadership. He argued that those who opposed the vote misunderstood the role of elders in society, particularly in the context of the Council of State meetings.
