a high-profile legal battle involving First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) and General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL), with allegations of a N12.3 billion fraud filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
CBN and FBN to Testify Against Otudeko
Reports reveal that representatives from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and FBN are set to testify against Dr. Otudeko and former FBN Managing Director Olabisi Onasanya in the ongoing fraud case. The EFCC alleges that the defendants secured over N6.2 billion in fraudulent credit facilities from First Bank between 2013 and 2014 under false pretenses, violating Nigeria’s Advance Fee Fraud Act.
Otudeko Refutes Allegations
In a strongly worded statement signed by Olasumbo Abolaji, General Counsel at Honeywell Group, Otudeko refuted any operational involvement in FBN Holdings or its banking subsidiary.
“Dr. Oba Otudeko has never served in an executive capacity within FBN Holdings or First Bank of Nigeria Limited. He remains committed to defending his impeccable reputation built over decades of enterprise and leadership,” the statement read.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Now 81 years old, Otudeko is focusing on mentoring future business leaders and driving societal progress through enterprise. “At this stage in his life, Dr. Otudeko has no interest in returning to the board of FBN Holdings or serving in any executive capacity,” the statement added.
EFCC’s Fraud Allegations
The EFCC accuses the defendants of obtaining billions under the guise of loans to Stallion Nigeria Limited, alleging that the representations were fraudulent. The trial is expected to reveal new details as government agencies, financial regulators, and legal experts closely monitor the case.
Otudeko’s Legacy and the Way Forward
Despite the controversy, Otudeko remains a towering figure in Nigeria’s business ecosystem. His contributions to the transformation of FBN from an old-generation bank to a leading pan-African institution have been lauded by many.
As the legal battles unfold, one thing is certain—this case could redefine corporate accountability and regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s financial sector.
