Drums Of Destiny Resound As Ooni Hosts Magical 2025 Ayanagalu Celebration!

The ancient city of Ile-Ife was set aglow on Thursday as thousands of culture enthusiasts, scholars, students, and traditionalists from Nigeria and beyond converged on the Courtyard of the Ooni’s Palace to celebrate the 2025 Ayanagalu Festival — a vibrant two-day homage to the Yoruba people’s deep-rooted drumming heritage.

Now in its third consecutive year in its modern iteration, the festival is an initiative of the Arole Oduduwa, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, aimed at honouring Ayan Agalu — the Yoruba deity of the drum — while preserving the spiritual, cultural, and historical significance of drumming for future generations.

Speaking at the grand event, the Ooni highlighted the drum’s sacred role in Yoruba cosmology, noting that drums have historically served not only as instruments of music but also as channels of communication, identity, and spiritual connection. “Whether heralding good news or sounding alarms of war, drums have always been our voice,” he said.

The monarch further traced the origin of drumming in Yoruba spirituality to Ayan Agalu, revered as one of the 201 deities in Yoruba mythology and believed to have begun his divine journey from Atiba in Ile-Ife. “To us, Ayangalu is not just a symbol; it is the spirit of the drum. Today, I drum for peace, joy, and abundant blessings,” he stated.

According to iReporter Online, Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, the Ooni’s wife, emphasized that the revived festival blends traditional drumming with contemporary performances and youth involvement.

“His Majesty wanted this to resonate with young people, and to bridge the gap between the ancient and modern,” she explained.

Highlighting its global ambition, the Queen also referenced the growing recognition of the Yoruba drum culture internationally, particularly in countries like Canada, the UK, Brazil, and Cuba. “In five years, we want to see the Ayanagalu Festival celebrated globally,” she said.

Festival Director Adewumi Adekunle Elizabeth reaffirmed the goal of empowering the youth as cultural custodians. She recalled that the initiative was born out of the palace’s regular engagement with local drummers.

“We’re here to build this legacy, and take it to the world stage,” she said.

One of the most anticipated moments of the festival was the drumming competition, where His Majesty personally awarded over N4.95 million in cash prizes.

The top prize of N1 million went to the best performer, followed by N750,000 and N500,000 for the second and third positions respectively.

Additional gifts included N2 million to the Moremi Ensemble, N500,000 to celebrated drummer Akande Onilu, and N100,000 each to two promising young drummers.

Also present were cultural scholars, professors from OAU’s Departments of Linguistics and Music, and respected traditional leaders, making the festival a powerful convergence of heritage and academia — a truly pan-Yoruba renaissance of the drum.
